teen cradling a cat 3 January 2010

On 31 December 2009, I was making portraits of this beautiful young lady--she is one of my nieces, which automatically makes her beautiful...why, no, I am not biased--when my cousin's cat began demanding attention. She paused the portrait process long enough to give the cat some loving. Sensing a chance to capture a little bit of magic, I stayed ready behind my lens. This natural, relaxed shot is the result of my diligence.

As a photographer, I am usually on the lookout for photo opportunities. I have learned that sometimes there are gems between the "real" shots, when the subject is not looking at the camera and you are not giving them direction. The picture-taking process may pause for them, but it doesn't pause for the photographer, not if you want to squeeze every drop of magic out of the limited time you have them in front of your lens.
