Closeup of the inside of a tulip, by Wanda McCrae
28 April 2009
Many beginner photographers are under the impression the only way to make good macro photos is to buy expensive macro lenses. While that is one way to do it, an equally valid way is to use extension tubes with the high-quality lenses you already own. The tubes simply increase the distance between the back of the lens and the sensor/film, which allows you to get much closer to your subject. Since there is no glass in the tubes, the sharpness of your lenses is not compromised in the least. And they take up a lot less space in your camera bag than an additional lens would!

At the beginning of this year I bought a set of three extension tubes for just under $100. They can be used individually or together, to allow me to get as close to my subject as I need to get in order to make the image I want. I went out yesterday with my extension tubes and made this photo of the inside of a tulip with my 50mm/f1.8 lens. I am quite happy to have the ability to make images like this one without needing to break the bank.
