	24 February 2009 In the two weeks since my last update, I have been about the business of turning 40. That means I have been thinking about Important ThingsTM that mostly have to do with how happy I am with the direction my life is going. My mother tells me her forties were the time when she began to grow into her power as a woman. I began a new phase of that transition last year, at the end of my 39th year and the start of my 40th year. (The way we Americans count birthdays means our nth birthday is the end of our nth year on the planet. For example, a baby is one year old at the end of their first year outside of their mother's womb.) So I can say my forties have brought the same kind of growth spurt for me as my mom's forties brought for her. My cousin asked what I wanted for my birthday. I told her I wanted a seamless black background. I thought she'd get me something small, suitable for small product photography. She bought me a 53-inch x 12-yard roll, so I went out and bought a portable stand. (I took these self-portraits with the background she bought me.) I also enrolled in a studio and lighting course, because if I am going to have a stand sturdy enough to hold lights, I may as well learn how to use lights in order to best know what lighting equipment to buy, right? So beginning on Monday, I will begin learning my way around a photography studio with my 5D. I never saw this in my twenties when I was fresh out of engineering school. Quite frankly, I like being forty a whole lot better than I liked being 20!
